Harry Mathews

Né à New York en 1930, Harry Mathews a vécu longtemps en Europe, surtout en France, où dès la fin de ses études en musique à Harvard il s’est installé avec sa femme et son premier enfant en 1952. Actuellement il passe la moitié de chaque année en France, l’autre moitié à Key West (Floride).
Mathews a publié ses premiers poèmes en 1956. A cette époque il a rejoint les poètes de la dénommée École de New York, ami notamment de John Ashbery, avec qui il a fondé (avec la collaboration de Kenneth Koch et de James Schuyler) la revue Locus Solus. Ayant participé depuis longtemps à la Paris Review, il en devins le directeur parisien de 1989 à 2003.
En 1962 il publia le premier de ses six romans, Conversions (le dernier, Ma Vie dans la CIA, parut en 2005). Il est l’auteur de plusieurs livres de poésie, de traductions, d’essais critiques, et d’autobiographie.
En 1970 Mathews rencontra Georges Perec ; une période d’amitié et de collaboration littéraire commença qui dura jusqu’à la mort de Perec en 1982. C’est Perec qui présenta Mathews à l’Oulipo, qui le coopta en 1973, le premier membre américan après Marcel Duchamp. En 1998 Mathews avec la collaboration d’Alastair Brotchie publia Oulipo Compendium, une étude encyclopédique du groupe et de ses affiliés.
En 1978 Mathews commença à enseigner dans plusieurs universités américaines (littérature française et comparée, ateliers d’écriture). Il est marié à l’écrivain français Marie Chaix, dont il a partagé la vie pendant 40 ans, jusqu’à son décès en 2017.

Born in New York City in 1930, Harry Mathews has spent much of his adult life in Europe, chiefly in France, where he moved with his first wife and daughter after receiving a diploma in musical studies from Harvard in 1952. He now divides his time between France and Key West, Florida.
Mathews began publishing his poetry in 1956. He soon afterwards became associated with the so-called New York School of poets, and particularly with John Ashbery, with whom he founded (in conjunction with Kenneth Koch and James Schuyler) the review Locus Solus in 1961. Long associated with the Paris Review,he became its Paris editor from 1989 to 2003.
 In 1962 he published the first of six novels, The Conversions (the most recent, My Life in CIA, appeared in 2005). He is the author of several volumes of poems, translations, criticism, and autobiography.
In 1970 Mathews met the French writer Georges Perec ; there began a period of literary collaboration and friendship that lasted until Perec’s death in 1982. Perec introduced Mathews to the Oulipo, to which he was elected in 1973, the first American member after Marcel Duchamp. In 1978 Mathews began teaching at various universities in the United States. His subjects have included French literature, comparative literature, and writing.
From 1949 to 1961 Mathews was married to Niki de Saint Phalle, by whom he had two children. He is now married to the French novelist Marie Chaix.
